Our Mission
The mission of Girl Scouts of Michigan Trails is to inspire all girls through Girl Scouting to the highest ideals of self-worth and dignity, that they may become caring, capable and competent young women; and to expose girls to diverse experiences that they may recognize and appreciate the pluralistic nature of society.
In other words - in Girl Scouting, Girls Rock! Girl Scouting is a place where you can dare to dream.
We Got History
In 1912, Julliette Gordon Low brought Girl Scouting to the United States from England . Girls everywhere were anxious to experience the challenges and adventures that had been previously reserved for boys. Consequently, troops participated in many activities that socially were not always considered appropriate for girls at the time. They hiked, camped and played basketball on a curtained court.
Today, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. is the largest voluntary organization for girls in the world. Girl Scouting is a movement that gives girls from all segments of the population a chance to develop their potential and to become a vital part of their community. Based on ethical values, it opens up a world of opportunity for youth, working in partnership with adult volunteers.
Girl Scouts of Michigan Trails, founded in 1947, serves the following 6 Counties: Kent , Ionia , Mecosta, Montcalm, Osceola and Ottawa . The council has a total of 12,000 Girl Scouts who participate in Girl Scout programs with the assistance of 2,500 adult volunteers. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5-17.
Interesting Facts about Girl Scout founder, Juliette Low
• In personality Juliette Low was known for being eccentric and charming. At an early scout board meeting she stood on her head to display the new Girl Scout shoes that she happened to be wearing.
• She was buried in her Girl Scout uniform with a telegram tucked in her pocket. The telegram was from the National Board of the Girl Scouts read, “You are not only the first Girl Scout, but the best Girl Scout of them all.”
• According to Low, it was her hearing loss that caused her to become a great talker. She said, "It is just too much work trying so hard to listen all the time."

*There is a spiritual foundation to the Girl Scout movement. However, since Girl Scouting is for all girls, those whose beliefs may be better expressed by a word or phrase other than “God” may substitute that word or phrase when they say the Girl Scout Promise. When written, the Promise always has the word “God.”
