Is my Girl Scout Cookie Purchase tax-deductible?

According to the IRS, individuals who purchase cookies for personal enjoyment are not officially making a donation to the Girl Scouts, rather, they are purchasing a product at a fair market value. For this reason, no part of the price of a box of cookies for personal enjoyment is tax-deductible.

Individuals who purchase cookies and instruct the troop to designate the purchase to the Gift of Caring program for the local food bank, Red Cross or military troops may find the purchase to be tax-deductible. Please consult your local tax advisor.

Is it true that the weight of a box of cookies has gone down this year?

The world economy is experiencing dramatic increases in commodity costs. Escalating oil and grain prices have significantly affected not only our daily lives, but also the economics of our cookie sale, as the costs associated with producing and delivering Girl Scout Cookies increase.

In response to this economic challenge, GSUSA (the governing body of all Girl Scout councils in the United States) agreed to a weight reduction in the six main flavors produced by both Girl Scout cookie bakers. These weights have been unchanged for more than ten years.

Effective for the 2009 cookie program, GSUSA approved a one-ounce reduction in the weights of Thin Mints, DoSiDos/Peanut Butter Sandwiches, and Trefoils/Shortbreads and .5 ounce reduction in Tagalongs/Peanut Butter Patties and Samoas/Caramel deLites.

Are there any trans fats in Girl Scout Cookies?

All Girl Scout cookie varieties are baked using recipes that meet the standard of “zero grams of trans fat per serving” with the same great taste that has made them one of America’s favorite treats. All varieties contain less than 0.5 grams trans fat per serving, which meets or exceeds the FDA guidelines for the “zero trans fat” designation.

We respect and encourage individuals to make informed decisions about the food items they consume. For those consumers who are not satisfied with the FDA’s national standard for “zero grams of trans fat per serving,” we have clearly listed all ingredients and nutritional profile of each variety on both the cookie box and cookie order form. As with any dessert or snack item, Girl Scout Cookies are not marketed as a dietary staple, but as a special treat that should be enjoyed in moderation.

What about the use of tropical oils in Girl Scout Cookies?

Our cookie bakers tell us it is still necessary to use tropical oils for the production of compound coating. Many top bakers have tried to stop using it, but without it, their products do not meet production standards. Our baker and their palm oil suppliers are members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), an organization of growers, buyers, manufacturers, conservationists and interested parties who are striving to develop and follow best practices to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil.
